The price cap isn't one price. Ofgem sets a separate cap for each of 14 regions, and a year of typical use costs £1,672 in East Midlands and £1,804 in Merseyside and Northern Wales. That's £132 more for the same energy.

Why the region matters
The standing charge and the unit rate both include the cost of the network that carries energy to your home, and network costs differ by region. Your region comes from your postcode, so a move from one region to another changes the cap that applies to you.
Find your own rates
The energy page takes your postcode and shows the cap for your region, for each way of paying. The moving home checker shows it alongside council tax and other costs for a postcode you're thinking of moving to.
Short answers
Which price cap region am I in?
Your region depends on your postcode, because it follows the electricity network that serves your home. Enter your postcode on the energy page to see your region and its rates.
Does the price cap cover gas as well as electricity?
Yes. Ofgem sets a cap on the unit rate and standing charge for each fuel, and each has a separate figure for every region.
How often does the price cap change?
Every three months, on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. Ofgem announces each new level about five weeks before it starts.
